Kuwait and Human Rights

We KNOW there is a problem with Human Rights in Kuwait. It's no secret since you can open up a local paper & read about all the Philippina women who find refuge in their embassy from their abusive sponsors. The video above shows a Kuwaiti woman actually doing her OWN work, trying to put the Kuwaiti's in the shoes of a domestic worker. Maids do NOT look like that ahaha.

Since many people read my blog, I just need to vent because I'm looking for some information that I cannot seem to find- but I know it's out there.

I want to volunteer with a church or organization (here in Kuwait) that helps VICTIMS of abuse. But I don't know where to look or ask. I'm about googled out & I haven't found a list of organizations. I read once that a church ministry does outreaches to abused women in their embassies but I can't seem to find that info anymore.

So if any Kuwaiti or expat who lives in Kuwait can share any info- that would be great

Sandstorm!

So I've been waiting for something different & exciting to happen before my next blog post. I think I had something in mind but now, I forgot! Since this sandstorm occurred yesterday, it's been the highlight of my day LOL! Now, I have posted 2 videos. I will let the videos speak for themselves. But let me tell you- I thought a sandstorm was just a bunch of sand blowing in the wind, nothing as big & scary as what you are about to see:

PRETTY crazy huh? I have been here almost a year & have NOT experienced a sandstorm. I was actually bummed b/c as much as a nuisance it is to clean up the mess, I wanted to experience EVERYTHING about Kuwait- the unbearable heat, the cold, & the sandstorms. So I'm happy I got to experience one- and not just ONE- but the WORST Kuwait has experienced! Look at what the Arab Times Online said about it:

A menacing black dust storm hit the country at a speed of over 50 kms per hour Friday evening, plunging the country into complete darkness before sunset. The storm reduced visibility to almost zero in some areas of the country and disrupted mobile phone services for almost 30 minutes as panicked citizens and residents tried to call to check the safety of their loved ones.

The Operations Room of the Interior Ministry received more than 200 calls for assistance; the most urgent among them was from a boat stranded in mid-sea. Nearly 100 female students were onboard and were on their way to Failaka Island when the storm came threatening. Security forces and Coast Guard members sprung into action and managed to bring the boat safely to shore.

To add to all the panic, rumors about an enormous fire near the beach spread like wild fire and subsided only when it became evident that the black cloud was a dust blanket and not smoke from a fire.

The dust storm first entered Jahra and moved towards the Capital area and then to the rest of the areas. Meteorologist at the Weather Forecast Department of the Directorate-General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) Issa Ramadan said northwesterly winds blowing at a speed of more than 50 kms per hour caused the dust storm. He and astronomer Saleh Al-Ojairi confirmed that there was almost zero visibility in some areas of the country.

Furthermore, Director of Operations Department at the Kuwait International Airport Essam Al-Zamil said due to bad weather conditions, dense dust, and strong winds, all incoming flights were diverted to airports nearby and outbound flights were allowed to take off only after the weather conditions improved.

Meanwhile, security forces, traffic patrols, fire fighters and members of Civil Defense Directorate were mobilized to tackle any accident or emergency. Patrols were deployed on all highways and the Interior Ministry urged all citizens and residents to stay indoors until visibility improves.

There were reports that northern areas of the country witnessed heavy rainfall, which helped in clearing the black dust layer to some extent. Sources say securitymen, even in such adverse conditions, went looking for a Kuwaiti woman in her 60s and her son who got lost in Salmi desert area. Securitymen found their car, but not the occupants until the filing of this report.

The dust storm heightened fear as images of destruction caused by two natural disasters in Japan are still fresh among people. One expatriate who was stuck up in a traffic jam during the ominous storm said he did not think he will reach his destination. He even tried calling his wife to say that if he doesn’t make it, consider the call his last. Fortunately or unfortunately the call didn’t go through and the wife was spared of some agony. He said the visibility was so less that drivers had to be ‘2,000 percent’ sure while driving. At several points, he got down of the vehicle to manually clean the windscreen of his vehicle.

Christian Woman Freed from Muslim Kidnappers in Pakistan

The following story is.....amazing.....a woman who has SUCH GREAT FAITH in a hopeless situation....is inspiring & brings me to shame. This is a story of DELIVERANCE but there is STILL many women in captivity.... Pakistan is one screwed up place...

This article was originally posted by  Open Doors UK & Ireland

LAHORE, Pakistan, March 11 (CDN) — A Christian mother of seven here who last August was kidnapped, raped, sold into marriage and threatened with death if she did not convert to Islam was freed this week.

After she refused to convert and accept the marriage, human traffickers had threatened to kill Shaheen Bibi, 40, and throw her body into the Sindh River if her father, Manna Masih, did not pay a ransom of 100,000 rupees (US$1,170) by Saturday (March 5), the released woman told Compass.

Drugged into unconsciousness, Shaheen Bibi said that when she awoke in Sadiqabad, her captors told her she had been sold and given in marriage.

“I asked them who they were,” she said. “They said that they were Muslims, to which I told them that I was a married Christian woman with seven children, so it was impossible for me to marry someone, especially a Muslim.”

Giving her a prayer rug (musalla), her captors – Ahmed Baksh, Muhammad Amin and Jaam Ijaz – tried to force her to convert to Islam and told her to recite a Muslim prayer, she said.

“I took the musalla but prayed to Jesus Christ for help,” she said. “They realized that I should be returned to my family.”

A member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Lahore, Shaheen Bibi said she was kidnapped in August 2010 after she met a woman named Parveen on a bus on her way to work. She said Parveen learned where she worked and later showed up there in a car with two men identified as Muhammad Zulfiqar and Shah. They offered her a job at double her salary and took her to nearby Thokar Niaz Baig.

There she was given tea with some drug in it, and she began to fall unconscious as the two men raped her, she said. Shaheen Bibi was unconscious when they put her in a vehicle, and they gave her sedation injections whenever she regained her senses, she said.

When she awoke in Sadiqabad, Baksh, Amin and Ijaz informed her that she had been sold into marriage with Baksh. They showed her legal documents in which she was given a Muslim name, Sughran Bibi daughter of Siddiq Ali. After Baksh had twice raped her, she said, his mother interjected that she was a “persistent Christian” and that therefore he should stay away from her.

Shaheen Bibi, separated from an abusive husband who had left her for another woman, said that after Baksh’s mother intervened, her captors stopped hurting her but kept her in chains.

Release
Her father, Masih, asked police to take action, but they did nothing as her captors had taken her to a remote area between the cities of Rahim Yar Khan and Sadiqabad, considered a “no-go” area ruled by dangerous criminals.

Masih then sought legal assistance from the Community Development Initiative (CDI), a human rights affiliate of the European Center for Law & Justice. With the kidnappers giving Saturday (March 5) as a deadline for payment of the ransom, CDI attorneys brought the issue to the notice of high police officials in Lahore and on March 4 obtained urgent legal orders from Model Town Superintendent of Police Haidar Ashraf to recover Shaheen, according to a CDI source.

The order ultimately went to Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Asghar Jutt of the Nashtar police station. Police accompanied by a CDI field officer raided the home of a contact person for the captors in Lahore, Naheed Bibi, the CDI source said, and officers arrested her in Awami Colony, Lahore.

With Naheed Bibi along, CDI Field Officer Haroon Tazeem and Masih accompanied five policemen, including ASI Jutt, on March 5 to Khan Baila, near Rahim Yar Khan – a journey of 370 miles, arriving that evening. Area police were not willing to cooperate and accompany them, telling them that Khan Baila was a “no-go area” they did not enter even during daytime, much less at night.

Jutt told area police that he had orders from high officials to recover Shaheen Bib, and that he and Tazeem would lead the raid, the CDI source said. With Nashtar police also daring them to help, five local policemen decided to go with them for the operation, he said.

At midnight on Sunday (March 6), after some encounters and raids in a jungle area where houses are miles apart, the rescue team managed to get hold of Shaheen Bibi, the CDI source said. The captors handed over Shaheen Bibi on the condition that they would not be the targets of further legal action, the CDI source said.

Sensing that their foray into the danger zone had gone on long enough, Tazeem and Jutt decided to leave but told them that those who had sold Shaheen Bib in Lahore would be brought to justice.

Fatigued and fragile when she arrived in Lahore on Monday (March 7), Shaheen Bibi told CDN through her attorneys that she would pursue legal action against those who sold her fraudulently into slavery and humiliation.

She said that she had been chained to a tree outside a house, where she prayed continually that God would help her out of the seemingly impossible situation. After the kidnappers gave her father the March 5 deadline last week, Shaheen Bibi said, at one point she lifted her eyes in prayer, saw a cross in the sky and was comforted that God’s mighty hand would release her even though her father had no money to pay ransom.

On four previous occasions, she said, her captors had decided to kill her and had changed their mind.

Shaheen Bibi said there were about 10 other women in captivity with her, some whose hands or legs were broken because they had refused to be forcibly given in marriage. Among the women was one from Bangladesh who had abandoned hope of ever returning home as she had reached her 60s in captivity.

Masih told CDN that he had prayed that God would send help, as he had no money to pay the ransom. The day before the deadline for paying the ransom, he said, he had 100 rupees (less than US$2) in his pocket.

If You're Against 'Hearing' Then You're DEAF & IGNORANT

No, not literally. And to the Deaf community, I do not equate being deaf with ignorance. I am talking about the controversial Congressional Hearing on Muslim Radicalization in America. The hearing, hosted by chairman of the committee, Representative Peter King (D-NY), is investigating the threat posed by homegrown Muslim terrorists. "At this stage in our history, there is an effort to radicalize elements within the Muslim community," Rep. King said on CNN's "State of the Union" this weekend. There has been an outcry by Muslim Americans criticizing the congressional committee for singling out the Muslim community as posing a threat to the country.

On Sunday, more than 500 protesters gathered in New York City's Time Square in opposition to the hearing. And one of the only two Muslims in the Congress, Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.) has compared the hearing to a modern-day witch hunt.

***DISCLAIMER***
I know that in most of my blogs I come across as a hater & bigot. I do NOT hate Muslims. Nor do I dislike them. 'Muslims' are people who have contributed to science, to education, to medicine, and are kind neighbors- in America at least. I can't talk about the Muslims who actually followed their Imam's decree to "kill all Christians" in a village south of Cairo simply because HE believes "they don't belong here." Don't believe me? Check out the article here:

http://www.compassdirect.org/english/country/egypt/69546/

No, I am not against people. I am against the Islamic doctrine. This doctrine forms the culture, laws, traditions, & minds of people. Hey, if jihad = murder then stay in your Muslim country & do it there, but don't come to America to carry out your spiritual obligation of murder whilst taking advantage of American freedoms that let you inside the country in the first place. People who do such things- regardless of their religion or lack thereof, remind me of these words:"Do not use your freedom as a cloak for VICE."

Also, we can have endless discussions about gang violence, racism, psycho mothers killing their own children, Clergy repulsively sexually abusing children, etc. but let's tackle one issue at a time. In this case, it's the Radicalization of Islam that has taken credit for terror attacks. ***END DISCLAIMER***

Question: Are there homegrown sleeper/terror cells in America? Well.....???? GOOGLE it. The answer is a big YES.
According to one CIA analyst I spoke with last week, al Qaeda sleeper cells are embedded in most U.S. cities with sizable Islamic communities. “Why do you think 9/11 hijacker Mohammed Atta traveled to Maine the night before the attacks?” asked the analyst. The obvious answer, he explained, was that Atta was meeting with a “handler” to receive final instructions. There is no doubt, explained the analyst, that thousands of al Qaeda sleeper agents, including conspirators involved in the Sept. 11 attacks, remain in the country.

These covert networks are ticking time bombs that wield the capacity and hatred to carry out acts worse than 9/11. What’s shocking, explained the analyst, is not the existence of this widespread covert network, but that law enforcement has largely been neutered in its response. According to the analyst, “the Agency” knows where most terrorist cells are located in the United States. But their hands are tied until the cells actually “go hot,” or move into action.

Obviously, this is not the most effective way to combat terrorism. The most effective way to prevent another 9/11 style attack is to root it out before it even starts. That means taking advantage of the modern intelligence we have and abducting members of domestic terrorist cells before — not after — they “go hot.”

The Christmas Day attempt by Mr. Abdulmutallab to detonate a bomb aboard a crowded Northwest Airlines flight should serve as a stark reminder of the threat presented by these cells. Though the New York Times is reporting that Mr. Abdulmutallab acted alone, the evidence suggests the opposite. Mr. Abdulmutallab studied in London, trained at Yemeni camps and departed from Holland to America. The obvious implication is that terrorist cells are interconnected.

It is equally clear that al Qaeda’s desire to deliver mass murder to America has not weakened in the nine years since Osama bin Laden declared the Sept. 11 attacks a “glorious success” and called for a “thousand more operations like these.” Since then, there have been at least 29 foiled terror plots against the United States.

According to ABC News, Mr. Abdulmutallab told interrogators that he was one of many bombers being groomed by al Qaeda to blow up American-bound aircraft.

Question: When an attack against American's as a people occur (there's a big difference when an individual is attacked when it's a personal vendetta, gang related violence, or a victim of a cereal killer/rapist/theft/assault), who is responsible? In the case of terrorism, there is almost ALWAYS SOMEONE or an organization, who claims credit for the atrocities committed.

Question: Was this particular attack related to the last? Yes, b/c the same person or organization also claimed responsibility. OR, an affiliated organization or person claimed responsibility. How do we know they're affiliates? They always claim ties. What are those ties? A common ideology of Islam- 'radicalized.' Even President Obama has stated,
"It is clear that al Qaeda increasingly seeks to recruit individuals without known terrorist affiliations ... to do their bidding. ... And that's why we must communicate clearly to Muslims around the world that al Qaeda offers nothing except a bankrupt vision of misery and death ...

Question: Why did Obama single out Muslims? Was he being a bigot when he said the above statement? Surely he is an Islamophobe?

"To acknowledge motive is not remotely to imply legitimacy or justification. In fact, the opposite is true: pretending motive doesn't exist legitimizes it more than acknowledging (and refuting) it would, since that fantasyland behavior creates the impression that one is afraid of its being aired and heard," wrote Glenn Greenwald at www.salon.com in his Jan 9, 2010 column

Question: Aside from the Oklahoma City Bomber who was considered a terrorist, the majority of considered 'terrorists' who attack America, Americans, & American Embassies in other nations, what is their motivation?

We know that they train- on & outside, US soil, to kill Americans. We know that there are ties all over the world that have links IN America. We know that their motivation is religious- Jihad- or to be POLITICALLY CORRECT "masked by the religion of Islam." I hate being politically correct. Yes I know it's not polite, but it's NOT the truth. People who like to be politically correct are ignorant. They want to shut their ears from hearing anything they claim is "hatred" & "bigoted" when the facts are FACTS. Those same people think we can live in some KUMBAYA world if we just TOLERATE each other. SURE, maybe YOU can tolerate 'them' BUT....to THEM, you're still an INFIDEL at the end of the day.

Now, I'm sorry to American Muslims who have to be inconvenienced at airports or stared at because of your beautiful hijabs (not being sarcastic, I've seen some GORGEOUS hijabs on women). I'm sorry that when you kneel to pray outside where you are visible, you become intriguing. I'm sorry that some people DO hate you. I'm sorry that soldiers who have lost limbs & fellow comrades also hate you b/c of their experiences in the recent wars fighting individuals motivated by their Muslim faith (from an American soldier's perspective).

The part where it gets TRICKY, is the fact that since these terrorists are Muslim, they can hide within the Muslim community in America- as is a factual occurrence. Whether or not ALL mosques are cooperating with the FBI, I don't know. Is that important? Given the fact that murderers are glorified Martyrs for Islam, I think it is the responsibility of EVERY Mosque in America to cooperate with the FBI. Not doing so only seems to implicate them of supporting, spreading, or harboring terrorism.

Folks, it's like we see 2 different faces of Islam. A Western version & Eastern version. We see the Eastern version conquer countries that oppress the minority religions, burn churches, kill Christians & Hindus. Some Muslim countries do not give women the same types of rights women in the West have.....my point? The West does not want the Eastern version of Islam and THAT my friends, is what America is afraid of. Most terrorists come from the Eastern version of Islam, share their version with Western muslims, and then engage. And in one case at least- it was an American-born muslim who actually got the radicalized Eastern version of Islam right on American soil.

Yes, America is a country where we celebrate freedom of religion. But where do we draw the line when an ideology motivates murder?

I support the hearing in NY b/c it is about ASKING questions like mine & doing the research.

My final opinion is this:

Stop protesting the congressional hearing and start protesting against the terrorists who 'hijack' Islam. If indeed TRUE Islam is NOT fairly represented by these terrorist organizations, then let America know instead of acting like a victim. But so far, your silence only seems to say "Yes, this form of Jihad is a tenant of Islam."

F the Blasphemy Law

To my fellow prayer warriors, we need to urgently unite in prayer- for SO many things, but I ask specifically for Asia Bibi. You may have heard about her- she's a
Pakistani Christian, mother of five who worked in the fields of a Muslim landowner. The women she worked with would mock her faith & question her. She explained why she followed Jesus & the women turned her in to the law of the land- Sharia- for blasphemy against the Prophet Mohammed.
Already the politician who was fighting to reverse her sentence was killed. Today I got an email that brings even more bad news:

"Shahbaz Bhatti, the Christian Federal Minister for Minorites in Pakistan, has been killed - this is the second highest profile humanitarian killing in Pakistan in the space of 3 weeks
http://britishpakistanichristian.blogspot.com/2011/03/shabaz-bhatti-has-been-assassinated.html
The BPCA condems the violence and calls for international intervention for a restoration of peace. The fate for Asia Bibi looks very dicey and we call for people to pray for her safety."

I know there are THOUSANDS more we need to pray for.... But with Asia's situation, just when it seemed there was hope for her release, the two most powerful people to stand before her are assassinated. God is greater than all those
People & their wickedness.
The bible says "do not fear man, for they can only kill the body. But fear God who can destroy both body & soul."
My friends I also ask that you pray for the Muslims in Pakistan, who are illiterate & zealous to follow the father of lies. According to some Muslims, blasphemy should only apply to Muslims. Pray that Jesus reveals himself to them!
If my God can calm a stormy sea, he can rescue & expand his kingdom through the deliverance of our sister Asia. It is under the threat of persecution that the Kingdom of God expands....
I know that for some of you in the US, this all seems so far away, not very urgent... But for me, being HERE, I am surrounded by death, darkness, injustice, persecution, racism.... Asia is someone who I've never met but have prayed for since I first heard of her arrest months ago. God has opened my eyes & heart to the persecuted church.
Friends, I ask for one more thing to pray for- me. Because I see so much evil prevail, my faith has been challenged. When I pray for deliverance of something that God can use for his glory & see the wicked get the 'victory'- like the 4 American's whose yacht was hijacked & they were killed- I..... Just don't know.... The Pslams talks about God rescuing his people... But He sometimes chooses not to. Why? I don't know... But as I struggle to reconcile that, I know I still have to trust him.
Thanks for praying alongside me. God bless each of you who have entered the throne on behalf of a stranger, who is really our dear sister.

PROTESTS IN KUWAIT March 2011

On twitter I asked whether or not it was likely that Kuwait would have protests. I highly doubted it since Kuwaitis seem very comfortable in their lifestyle. One gal(@mssenos) emphatically said, "NO WAY!" but another girl (@thuraiia) said, "yep. Sometime around March 13." The conversation between the 3 of us continued. MSSENOS asked THURIIA, "For what?!" & THURIIA replied, "the resignation of the prime minister and his government. it's been going on since last year. Thousands of people showed up in the last one {protest]. I was there! I don't know the estimate of the next one though." I had asked THURIIA of a guess as to how many people would actually show up.

Now according to Kuwait Times online, they confirm that protests are planned as soon as March 8.
In fact there are 2 groups, opposite in nature it seems, that both call for the resignation of the Prime Minister & his cabinet. One opposition group is apparently more conservative than the current cabinet (any more conservative & you're in Saudi Arabia in my opinion!) & the other group is a liberal group. I have a feeling that the more conservative group may be the exact people Al-Hilal wrote about in his article "Free Kuwaitis From The Shackles Of Radicalism" in the Arab Times. I re-posted his opinion article in my blog because I found his thoughts to be refreshing. Here's the link to that post:

Here's a link to an article that talks about the Fifth Fence youth group. They're tackling WASTA!

Well, for more accurate information on this topic, I have re-posted the article from Kuwait Times. This is the URL:

Pressure mounting on premier to step down
Published Date: March 01, 2011
By B Izzak, Staff Writer

KUWAIT:
Pressure mounted on Prime Minister HH Sheikh Nasser Mohammad Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah to resign as two opposition groups explicitly called for forming a new government under a new prime minister. The Popular Action Bloc headed by veteran MP Ahmad Al-Saadoun called in a statement yesterday for forming a new government under a new prime minister that should start necessary political reforms. Later, KUNA reported HH the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah will address the nation today. Sheikh Sabah addressed
the nation on Thursday and reiterated his commitment to parliamentary democracy and to the 49-year-old constitution. Kuwait was the first Arab state in the Gulf to have a parliament in 1962.

The Popular Action Bloc's statement insisted that the six cabinets headed by Sheikh Nasser since his appointment to the post in Feb 2006 have failed to enforce any reforms and has only acted to create divisions in the society that has threatened national unity. "The first step toward reform and correction is in forming a new government under a new leadership capable of running the country," said a statement by the bloc, adding that the current Cabinet under its leadership has failed in running the affairs
of the country.

The Popular Action Bloc believes that the new approach of the new government under its new premier should be aiming at reforming the imbalances facing the country," the statement said. The new government should "halt the forces of corruption, preserve the constitution and activate and apply all its articles, safeguard public funds and protect public properties", it said. The new Cabinet should also "reform education, upgrade healthcare, safeguard freedoms and find solutions for unemployment and housing,
it added. The bloc, which has four MPs in the 50-member Assembly and several supporters, said that the new Cabinet must be formed of highly qualified and honest statesmen who will effectively participate in taking political decisions.

The youth group Fifth Fence also called in a statement yesterday for changing the Cabinet and the prime minister and called on its supporters for a protest on March 8 at the National Assembly to press for changing the prime minister and the Cabinet. The Fifth Fence insisted that during the past five years, the Cabinet failed to forge with reforms and development and in facing and halting corruption in the country. The protest was due to be held on Feb 8 but was delayed because of Kuwait's national occasion
s in the month of February.

On Saturday, a newly-formed liberal movement, the Kuwaiti Progressive Group, also called for the resignation of the prime minister and forming a new Cabinet and a new prime minister. The new demands come amid reports that a top level meeting by the Al-Sabah ruling family was recently held and decided that the government of Sheikh Nasser will resign after marking Kuwait's national events and most probably before the National Assembly reconvenes on March 8 after six weeks of holidays. The reports, carried by
the online newspaper Al-Aan, said it was not immediately known if the meeting decided to change the prime minister or not.

Also, first deputy prime minister and Defense Minister Sheikh Jaber Al-Mubarak Al-Sabah said on Saturday that a number of meetings were held that included him, Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammad Al-Sabah and deputy premier for economic affairs Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahd Al-Sabah with three leading figures. Sheikh Jaber said the meetings discussed local political developments but gave no further details. Local observers believe that the Cabinet will resign before March 8 and expect one of two scenarios to take plac
e: either Sheikh Nasser carries out an expanded reshuffle or a new prime minister is appointed to form a new Cabinet.

Sheikh Nasser has been under increasing pressure to resign and in January narrowly survived a non-cooperation vote that could have ousted him. Since being appointed, Sheikh Nasser has fought almost non-stop with the opposition in parliament and five of his six cabinets were forced to resign. As a result of ongoing political crises, parliament was also dissolved three times.
